Your go-to place to get ready for the game

Today we’ll be covering magic, Ravenclaw-style

The Fear of the Unknown

Right now, there is no way of knowing what Wizards Unite will bring us. The Calamity is unpredictable, and anything could happen. And while we try to track and control the traces of magic, we also need to be careful not to expose the wizarding world to those pesky Muggles.

So the best way to be ready for anything is to use both our magic and our minds, like any Ravenclaw would. It is time to choose Brain over Brawn.

Don’t underestimate simple charms

Some of these might at first seem simple and easy to learn. However, when we have true control of them and the ability to choose the best one for each situation, we can be practically unstoppable. There’s no need to fight if no one knows you’re there.

So here are some of our favourite charms, and how they might come in handy against The Calamity.

Lumos and Nox

lumos wizards unite

These two clever little charms were invented in the 18th century by  Levina Monkstanley. She first publicly used them when she was trying to find her fallen quill in a dusty corner. It soon became extremely popular.

When cast, the Illuminating Charm will light up the tip of the caster’s wand. The shade and brightness or the amount of light will depend on the power used. When the wizard is done, he simply needs to cast the Wand-Extinguishing Charm, Nox.

To illuminate the end of a wand, the caster must call out the incantation “Lumos.” If correctly incanted, the end of the wand will then illuminate and cast light in the immediate vicinity of the caster. It can also be used to illuminate unseen entrances.”

Its use in Wizards Unite

These two charms can come in quite handy when out in the Muggle world, especially at night. The light can be dimmed enough that it will only light whatever the caster wants to see at a certain point, which is quite helpful when trying not to be noticed. Whether we are looking for fantastic beasts in the middle of the woods or tracking a Calamity-related event in the middle of the night, these two little spells are a must for any clever witch or wizard. And of course, if we do get in a bit of a bind, a powerful enough Lumos could blind those around us long enough for us to attack (or get away).

Accio and Depulso

The Summoning Charm propels an object towards the caster. It is able to summon objects in direct line of sight of the caster, as well as things out of view, by calling the object aloud after the incantation (unless the spell is casted nonverbally). This spell needs thought behind it, and the object must be clear in the casters mind before trying to summon it. The further away the object is, the more power the caster needs.

And then he heard it, speeding through the air behind him; he turned and saw his Firebolt hurtling towards him around the edge of the woods, soaring into the enclosure, and stopping dead in mid-air beside him, waiting for him to mount.

The Banishing Charm is largely the opposite of Accio. It can  shoot things away from the caster, whether a living organism or an object. This charm does not require any though behind the casting, since it will banish whatever the wand is aimed at. It can also be quite useful in duels.

They were supposed to be practising the opposite of the Summoning Charm today ‚ÄĒ the Banishing Charm. Owing to the potential for nasty accidents when objects kept flying across the room. Professor Flitwick had given each student a stack of cushions on which to practise, the theory being that these wouldn‚Äôt hurt anyone if they went off target. It was a good theory, but it wasn‚Äôt working very well.”

Its use in Wizards Unite

There are few things as useful, when trying to accomplish a mission and remain hidden, than the abbility to move objects from afar. A well cast Summoning Charm will let us grab almost any beast that is trying to run away from us or even carefully take magical artifacts withouth the Muggles around us noticing. The Banishing Charm can also get us out of a bad spot if there is something suspiciously magical lying around and a Muggle shows up. Left your Nimbus out in plain sight? Banish it with a quick word before anybody can see it.

This two are also useful in a duel. Whether you got your opponent to drop their wand and you want to grab it, or you’d like to throw a very large object their way, these two seemingly simple charms will get the job done.

Alohomora

The Unlocking Charm allows witches and wizards to unlock and open doors, windows and objects not protected by magic. It can also open doors locked by the Locking Spell (Colloportus).

The Anti-Alohomora Charm can counteract  the Unlocking Charm. Magical locks also exist and are placed on many a wizarding home.

“There are many ways to pass through locked doors in the magical world (see the Fire-Making Spell, Gouging Spell, and the Reductor Curse) where you wish to enter or depart discreetly, however, the Unlocking Charm is your best friend.”

Its use in Wizards Unite

Wizards Unite will take place in the Muggle world, which is where The Calamity is most active. This little spell could open the doors or windows to just about any building we might need to get into. It’s great for hunting down fantastic beasts and quite useful for hiding if needed. It might even come in handy to unlock some magical artifacts.

Disillusionment Charm

The Disillusionment Charm is a spell that is used to conceal a target. The charm turns whatever it was cast on into a sort of chameleon. The object, creature or person under this charm will take the colour and texture of whatever is behind and around them. Wizards with a licence to own fantastic beasts like Hippogriffs or winged horses must use a Disillusionment Charm on them on a daily basis.

“Harry looked down at his body, or rather, what had been his body, for it didn’t look anything like his anymore. It was not invisible; it had simply taken on the exact colour and texture of the kitchen unit behind him. He seemed to have become a human chameleon.”

Its use in Wizards Unite

A Disillusionment charm used on ourselves would allow us to hide in plain sight. Its use would also allow us to follow a target unnoticed and listen to their conversations.

Since the charm can be used on objects or animals as well, it could come in handy when Muggles are around, as a means to keep them from seeing traces of magic.

Revelio

The Revelio Charm can reveal concealed objects, messages, invisible things, and passages. It may also be used to reveal the true identity of someone who changed their appearance with a spell. Most notably, it was the charm used by Newt Scamander during the First Wizarding War to reveal Percival Graves was, in fact, Gellert Grindelwald.

When ‘Revelio’ is used directly on a person, it removes magical disguises.

Pottermore

Its use in Wizards Unite

The Calamity is leaving traces of magic all over Muggle areas. However, not all of these traces can be seen by the naked eye. The Revelio Charm could allow any Task Force member to find hidden passageways or objects. Or perhaps even access SoS Task Force Muggle Headquarters.

Wingardium Leviosa

wingardium leviosa feather

This Levitation Charm is a clear improvement over other levitation charms, such as Locomotor. This is because it can not only lift objects high into the air but, at the same time, it allows the caster to move them. There seems to be no limit to the weight of the object being lifted, as long as the witch or wizard casting it is powerful enough.

Unfortunately, the Levitation Spell does not work on human beings. Though a human can be levitated using this charm, it is actually their clothing that are affected. The charm’s power is, however, limited. Although it allows for a human to float a few feet off the ground, it does not give them any range of movement like it does other objects.

“The Levitation Charm is one of the first spells learnt by any young witch or wizard. With the charm a witch or wizard can make things fly with the flick of a wand. The charm is an excellent test of your magical skills, wand control and above all, patience.”

Its use in Wizards Unite

Much like many of the charms mentioned before, the Levitation Charm is deceitfully simple. However, it can be used in an array of situations. Much like the Summoning and Banishing Charms, this one would allow the caster to bring an object or beast closer to them, or send it far, far away. It is also much more subtle in the way it moves an object than a simple Accio, since the caster can control the speed and trajectory of the object being moved. So while bringing forward an object through a Levitation Charm might take a little more time and concentration than the Summoning Charm would, it is in fact much more inconspicuous.

So let’s get our wands out and start practicing. We want to be ready when Wizards Unite AR Game finally arrives!

And above all, stay alert!

Remember: keep your eyes peeled, your ears open and your wands ready.
