There are many important figures in the Wizarding World. But here we will focus one of the few wizards everyone seems to love, and who will be an important figure in the upcoming Wizards Unite Augmented Reality Game.
He will be an important part of Wizards Unite, leading Magizoologists to glory. So let’s learn a little more about him.
Today’s profile: Rubeus Hagrid
Hagrid in Wizards Unite
If you have been keeping up with our Gameplay posts you will know by now that, once we start the game, we will have to choose between three professions: you can be a Professor, an Auror or a Magizoologist.
Each profession will have a Leader that will be our contact and guide throughout the game. This person will be a well known witch or wizard we will recognise from the books, of course. And in the case of Magizoologist, who better to lead the charge than our friendly half-giant, Rubeus Hagrid?.
Although gameplay information is still scarce, we know a large part of the game will focus on searching for Foundables all around us and casting the corresponding Confoundables. Many of those Foundables will be fantastic beasts. We will need to interact with them several times for them to appear in our Registry (the number of times will depend on the type of creature).
We haven’t seen the Magizoologist skill tree yet. But considering who their leader is, I think they will be ready for anything.
With all this in mind, it only makes sense to quickly delve a little deeper into this most lovable wizard’s life. Although there is very little we don’t know about him by now.
Hagrid was born in December, 1928. Son of a very small wizard and a giantess, Hagrid is considered a half-giant. When he was only three, his mother left the family home to return to her Giant colony, and Hagrid was raised by his father.
Although his father passed away while Hagrid was still a student at Hogwarts, he always remembered the wizard fondly.“My dad was broken-hearted when she wen’. Tiny little bloke, my dad was. By the time I was six I could lift him up an’ put him on top o’ the dresser if he annoyed me. Used ter make him laugh…”
Hagrid joined the Gryffindor house in 1940. However, he only completed the first two years of his schooling. When he was in his third year, he was framed by fellow student Tom Riddle, who had opened the Chamber of Secrets. Although it was Slytherin’s basilisk that killed Myrtle, Riddle managed to convince Headmaster Dippet that Hagrid’s pet acromantula, Aragog, was to blame. Hagrid was immediately expelled.
Hagrid’s father had passed away before his expulsion, and his mother was away with other giants. Since Hagrid had nowhere to go, then Transfiguration Professor Dumbledore convinced Dippet to let young Hagrid stay at Hogwarts and assist Professor Kettleburn.
The boy who lived
Hagrid was the person in charge of taking Harry Potter to safety on that fateful night his parents were murdered. It would only make sense that he would be the one to rescue him from that Muggle life he lived with the Dursleys.
It was Hagrid who introduced Harry (and every reader) to the wonders of the Wizarding World. During Harry’s years at Hogwarts, Hagrid was always a safe figure he and his friends could count on for guidance, friendship and protection.
During Harry’s second year at Hogwarts Voldemort, using Ginny Weasley, opened the Chamber of Secrets once more. The Minister felt Hagrid and Aragog were to blame. He ordered Hagrid be taken to Azkaban for the attacks. That stay was, according to Hagrid himself, the worst experience of his life.
Over the years, Hagrid was loyal to Hogwarts and Dumbledore. He took his job as Groundskeeper very seriously. During Harry’s third year, Professor Kettleburn finally retired and Hagrid became the new Professor of Care of Magical Creatures. The road was not an easy one for Hagrid. But he enjoyed teaching about those dangerous beasts who weren’t so dangerous after all. They just wanted to be loved.
The Second Wizarding War
After the rebirth of Voldemort, Hagrid rejoined the Order of the Phoenix, of which he had been a member during the First War. Following Dumbledore’s orders, he met with the Giants in an attempt to ensure they wouldn’t side with Voldemort. Although this mission was thoroughly unsuccessful, one unexpected thing came of it. Hagrid met his half-brother, Grawp. A tiny giant, according to Hagrid.
Believing the other giants would kill him for being so small and weak, Hagrid secretly brought Grawp back to Hogwarts, where he hid him in the Forbidden Forest.
Years later, during the Battle of the Seven Potters, it was Hagrid who drove the real Harry away from Privet Drive. Just like he had when Harry was just a baby, Hagrid took the boy to safety in Sirius’ old flying motorcycle.
The Battle of Hogwarts
Hagrid spent years fighting Voldemort and his Death Eaters and keeping Hogwarts students safe. It was only natural that he would be present during this last battle.
Harry believed it was the only way to stop the battle and save those still at the school. He decided to face Voldemort and give his life in exchange for everyone else´s.
Voldemort, of course, cast the Killing Curse on Harry. Afterwards, Narcissa Malfoy lied to protect her son and told Voldemort Harry was dead. That cruel wizard decided he wanted Hagrid to be the one to carry the body back to Hogwarts. Hagrid, heartbroken, did as he was told, unaware that Harry was still alive.
Soon the battle resumed and, with the last Horcrux destroyed, Harry finally defeated Voldemort for good.
After the war
Hagrid resumed his position as Professor once Hogwarts opened its doors again. He still remained at his beloved school when Albus Potter started Hogwarts.
But recently, he has been called to action by the Ministry. With the Calamity threatening the wizarding world, Hagrid is the man in charge of guiding the Statute of Secrecy Task Force members who choose to specialise in Magizoology.
