Physical Appearance

Not many who have seen a Dementors wish to share the experience. Much less describe the creatures. In fact, very little is known about Dementors at all.

Dementors are ethereal, insubstantial creatures with no perceptible structure.

Dementors are sentient creatures, capable of understanding and following orders, and also capable of forming their own alliances.

A Dementor’s body is always covered in black shroud-like hooded cloaks. Its frayed fabric seems to float over their bodies in that ethereal way of theirs. Those who have seen under these cloaks describe the creatures as a humanoid skeleton covered in frail, decaying tissue. What is left of their skin and muscle is grey and black in colour, but still manages to convey decay.

Their heads have a similar shape and size to a human’s, but the composition is completely different.


Dementors are blind, and therefore have no need for eyes. They can track their prey by their feelings.

Those who have studied these non-beings describe them as amortal, neither living nor dead. They don’t need to breathe and take all their sustenance from their victims’ energy, so they have no need for a nose or mouth either.

They do, however, have a gaping hole in their face, where one would expect the mouth to be. This is what they use when they administer the Dementor’s Kiss.

Dementors do not walk and generally float a few feet off the ground. However, they are perfectly capable of flying and can travel long distances when they wish to.

Origin and habitat

As with everything else, we know very little of the Dementors’ origin. So we will focus on their habitat instead.

Azkaban was once a secret, hidden island created with magic at some point in the fifteenth century. It was the home of a little-known but extremely powerful dark wizard: Ekrizdis. This wizard hated Muggles and committed heinous acts within his secret fortress. When Ekrizdis died and the protective charms faded away, the wizarding community became aware of the island’s existence.

Those who entered to investigate refused afterwards to talk of what they had found inside, but the least frightening part of it was that the place was infested with Dementors.

For a long time, the island was left alone and deserted. But years later, when magical prisons became hard to control, Azkaban became the perfect solution. The Minister for Magic at the time was highly authoritarian. He didn’t care what happened to prisoners as long as they didn’t escape. So this seemed like the perfect deal. Dementors would keep prisoners captive and controlled. And The Ministry would provide them with easy access to sustenance. Namely, the prisoners themselves.


Years later, once the ‘living’ conditions became public, the Minister at the time considered closing Azkaban and creating another wizarding prison. However, Azkaban was home to thousands of Dementors by then. Taking away the prisoners would risk those Dementors leaving the island in search of other food sources. The risk was too high. The prison remained as it was.

It was Kingsley Shacklebolt, as Minister of Magic that finally expelled Dementors from Azkaban. Aurors are now in charge of the prison and its prisoners. However, no one knows where Dementors now reside. Or their numbers.

Special Abilities

Dementors have many effects on their surroundings. Wherever they appear, temperatures drop quickly all around the area. They also produce a sense of unease whenever close, since they feed off positive feelings and memories. In fact, prolonged exposure to Dementors will often cause madness and death by sorrow, as anyone who ever visited Azkaban could attest to.

There are dark creatures, and then there are Dementors. The embodiment of what it means to feel utterly hopeless, these must be the most terrifying beings the wizarding world has to offer…

But that is not what makes them terrifying. They have another ability: the Dementor’s Kiss.

Dementors can feed on humans and wizards alike, although they are invisible to Muggles. They can draw sustenance from anyone’s happy thoughts and feelings, leaving their victim feeling as if all hope is gone from the world.


But if a Dementor is hungry and gets close enough to its victim, it can give them the ‘Kiss’. Through this act, a Dementor will feed off its prey to the point where they suck their very soul from the body and consume it. The victim will remain as a husk of himself, a soulless being.

Defense against Dementors

While clever witches and wizards know chocolate works as a magical remedy of sorts after an encounter with a Dementor, it can only help alleviate some of the symptoms. It will simply make the victim feel slightly better.

There is only one known spell that can help a witch or wizard fight a Dementor, and it is highly advanced magic: The Patronus Charm.

As a pure, protective magical concentration of happiness and hope (the recollection of a single talisman memory is essential in its creation) it is the only spell effective against Dementors. The majority of witches and wizards are unable to produce Patronuses and to do so is generally considered a mark of superior magical ability.

In order to correctly perform the charm, the incantation is not enough. The caster must concentrate on a singular memory, the happiest they can think of. Something that touches them in a deep, emotional level. Then, with that memory, with that feeling of happiness in mind, they can pronounce the incantation. Expecto Patronum.


When correctly cast, the Patronus will take the form of an animal with significance for the witch or wizard who cast the spell. A witch or wizard cannot choose the form the Patronus takes, although this form might change in some instances. Important changes in someone’s life, be it a tragic loss or a new-found love, can cause their Patronus to morph into a different animal.

When the Patronus Charm is performed correctly, but the caster is not powerful enough, they might produce a wisp of silvery light. This can offer some shelter against a Dementor, but will not untimately give enough protection.

Dementors in Wizards Unite

We already know, from the images we saw on the Gameplay release of March 11th, that Dementors will be part of Wizards Unite. In fact, we saw a Dementor attacking Harry during a Quidditch match. This was a displaced memory from Harry’s third year at Hogwarts, during the search for Sirius Black. At that time the Ministry stationed some of the Azkaban Dementors at Hogwarts to guard the school grounds and find the escaped prisoner.


While in this case the Dementor functioned as a game Foundable, we believe we will also have to fight them when we venture with our teams into a Fortress. Let’s just hope technology hasn’t advanced enough for us to feel the effects of having a Dementor nearby. That’s one kiss nobody wants.
