Wizards Unite Gameplay: Portkeys

So we’ve been reviewing the new Wizards Unite footage and breaking it down into smaller parts. We’ve already covered those lovely Foundables we’ll and interact with along the way. We’ve reviewed the three Professions we can choose from for our wizarding career. In our last post we’ve even gone over the different in-game Locations we will be able to go into.

But there’s another detail that caught our attention:

Gameplay: Portkeys

The use of Augmented Reality in Wizards Unite will help turn our surroundings into something you might find in the wizarding world. But there’s more, according to official sources.

And if that’s not all real enough for you…Discovering Portkeys will bring everything to a whole new level.

What is a Portkey?

The first appearance of a Portkey was in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when Harry, Hermione and the Weasley bunch attend the Quidditch World Cup. The object in question was an old boot turned into a Portkey Portmanteau. This ‘mundane’ object allowed them to be transported to the World Cup location.

There have been more instances of Portkeys in the wizarding world (although they are heavily monitored by the Ministry) but the boot is probably the most iconic one. This is likely the reason why Niantic chose it to represent Portkeys in general.

How does a Portkey work?

In the wizarding world, a Portkey is generally set in such a way that it will activate at a certain time and transport whoever is touching it to another, pre-set location.

In Wizards Unite it seems it will be just slightly different.

From what we’ve read and seen so far, Portkeys will simply appear in our surroundings in the shape of an old boot. In that, they will be similar to other Foundables. Once we find a Portkey Portmanteau (the object acting as a Portkey, in this case the boot) we must unlock it. It is still unclear exactly how we can unlock it, but there will probably be a specific spell for it.

An active portkey will open a window into another place, much like we saw in the picture above. Once we step through this window, the experience will become even more submersive.

For the first time you’ll be able to step into a full 360-degree Advanced AR immersive experience in places like Ollivander’s Wand Shop.

Where can we Portkey to?

Considering we’ve seen images of ‘memories displaced in time’ such as Harry being attacked by Dementors while playing Quidditch or Ron facing a Boggart in the shape of Aragog (both events that took place in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) the possibilities are probably limitless.

One of our first stops might be Ollivanders so we can choose our wand (or let a wand choose us). We might even stop at Madam Malkin’s to get some fancy robes. We all want to make a great impression on our first day as SoS Task Force members!

But time displacement could allow us to pop into Dumbledore’s office back when he was headmaster at Hogwarts, or maybe a quick visit to the Three Broomsticks or The Hog’s Head for an energy top up.

What do you think about Portkeys? What are you looking forward to visiting the most? Do you think we’ll be able to go to the Burrow? Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes? Maybe visit the Ministry itself? Let us know in the comments!
