The Calamity continues to put the Wizarding World at risk. Reports indicate dragons have disappeared from magical reserves all around the world and the Ministry fears they might bring chaos to Muggle areas. The Statute of Secrecy Task Force needs your help to deal with this global challenge. Let’s have a look at what you can do to save our way of life (and perhaps a Muggle or two).

The Dragon Oddities Announcement

I’m sure everyone playing Wizards Unite got really excited when Niantic first announced dragons would make an appearance in the game during their SDCC panel. We only got a glimpse, but they looked amazing.

Soon we found out these dragons would be region-locked, which meant the only way to get all four would be doing some serious world-wandering. Here’s a look at which region will be getting which dragon.

The First Wizards Unite Fan Festival (WUFF)

Indianapolis will be the first city to host a Wizards Unite Fan Festival. And the people behind the game are making sure it will be a weekend to remember. Not only will attendees (many fantastic WuTubers among them) will get the unique chance to spend two days surrounded by other Potterheads who love the game as much as they do; they will also have the unique opportunity to find all four types of Dragon oddities in one place. If they play fast enough, they might even manage to complete both Dragons Registry pages in the Oddities family.

The First Wizards Unite Global Challenge

Unfortunately, not all witches and wizards have access to Ministry-approved Portkeys or can Apparate such long distances, so there are many, many players unable to attend the Indianapolis Fan Festival. Thankfully, Niantic and Warner Bros didn’t leave us hanging. While they had hinted at something special for those who couldn’t attend the Festival before, it wasn’t until yesterday that we got the actual details.

Here is the Tweet where they announced the Wizards Unite Global Challenge.

Now, the information on the post is a little confusing, let’s see if we can break it down a bit.

The Official Post

Can’t make it to Indianapolis for the first Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Fan Festival? Don’t worry, you’ve still got an action-packed weekend in store! We’re excited to announce the Fan Festival Global Challenge, a challenge in which players all around the world will be able to encounter four new types of Portkey Portmanteaus throughout the weekend. Each of these special Portmanteaus will contain a Portkey that will transport you to the Forbidden Forest where you’ll have the opportunity to collect one of four Dragon Eggs. You’ll be able to easily identify these special Portmanteaus on the map, as they’ll match the color of the Dragon Egg found within.

The Portkeys

Throughout the weekend we’ll be tracking the number of Dragon Eggs collected, and if certain milestones are reached, players will unlock a variety of rewards starting from September 2 at 10:00 A.M. PDT to September 9 at 10 A.M. PDT. Each Dragon Egg is associated with a reward shown below, so make sure to collect Portmanteaus linked with the reward you’re most interested in earning. We’ll be posting progress updates on our social channels throughout the event, so make sure to follow along!

The Global Challenge Portkey Chart

If attendees are successful, a special Day of the Dragons event will take place on September 7. During this 3-hour period, each region will be visited by a Dragon not typically found in the area. The exact type of Dragon will depend on which type of Dragon Egg was collected the most in that specific region during the Global Challenge. For example, if players in Asia collect more Antipodean Opaleye Dragon eggs than any other type during the Global Challenge, they will encounter Antipodean Opaleye Oddities for the 3-hour event and receive bonus XP for all Dragons returned during the Day of the Dragons!

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Fan Festival is shaping up to be an incredible event and we can’t wait for you to take part, no matter where in the world you are. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest updates, and discuss the upcoming event with fellow players on the community forum.

What this all means

To make sense of all this, let’s start off with a graphic.

Now the Global Challenge basically consists of three parts:

Part 1: Portkeys and Eggs

During this weekend, August 31 to September 1, special Portkeys will appear on our map. These are 1km Portkeys that will transport us to the Forbidden Forest for a chance to get a dragon egg.

The Portkeys on the map will be the same colour as the egg, so we can choose which type of dragon we want to focus on. This is a very important detail, and here’s why. The extra Dragon that will appear during Community Day will be determined by how many eggs of each type your area recovered. The egg that was recovered most will be the dragon we’ll get a chance to return.

Now let’s look at those new Registry pages:

Oddities III:

  • Antipodean Opaleye (threat level: severe) – Oceania
  • Chinese Fireball (threat level: emergency) – Asia, Middle East and India

Oddities IV:

  • Peruvian Vipertooth (threat level: emergency) – Americas and Greenland
  • Common Welsh Green (threat level: severe) – Europe and Africa
How to choose a Portkey:

Once we take all this information into account, this should be fairly easy.

You should check which Dragon will appear in your area and then try to open as many Portkeys for its Registry companion as possible.

In my case, the dragon that will appear on the map on a regular basis is the Common Welsh Dragon. That is Oddities IV and its companion is the Peruvian Vipertooth. So I will try to open as many blue Portkeys as I can so I will hopefully be able to complete -and prestige- one Registry page during the Community Day instead of having both pages halfway done. Of course, which dragon appears will depend on every player in the region, but if we all use the same logic it should work perfectly.

Part 2: Global Achievements and rewards

This is the chart that will show how many eggs of each type a region has recovered during this weekend. If we reach the target milestone, we will receive special rewards during the following week, September 2 to September 9. At this moment it is unclear exactly how we will receive these rewards, but it’s important for everyone to try to get as many eggs as possible during the weekend so every player in the region can enjoy the rewards.

As with the previous part, I would recommend largely disregarding which reward you’d prefer and focus on which dragon would be most useful, as this is what most other players will do. Reaching the milestone will be easier if we’re all pulling in the same direction.

Part 3: Special Community Day – Day of the Dragon

On Saturday, September 7, a second type of dragon will appear on our maps for a whole three hours. The dragon type will be determined, as we mentioned before, by which egg each region recovered the most of. Which is why it’s important to focus our efforts this weekend on the Portkeys for the dragon we want to get on Dragon day.

Although it wasn’t announced specifically, everything seems to indicate our regional dragon will begin appearing on the map on Monday, September 2. This gives us five days to get all 10 fragments we need to complete the image. That way we can use Dragon day to get 10 fragments of the special dragon, then Prestige the page and hopefully complete the image again.

The number of fragments for these pages are:

  • Standard: 10 fragments
  • Bronze: 20 fragments
  • Silver: 30 fragments
  • Gold: 80 fragments

As we can all understand, prestiging the page all the way to gold within three hours will be nearly impossible, unless these oddities appear even more often than Brilliant Traces during an event. But we can try, battle those dragons and enjoy another Community Day while trying to remain hidden from Muggles.

And that’s a wrap

How far do you think you’ll be able to prestige the oddities page before Dragon Day is over? Are you planning on picking only one type of Portkey or just go for all of them? Let us know in the comments! And make sure you’re ready to enjoy the weekend and get all those eggs, wear comfy shoes and bring your wand along in case those dragons eggs are too well hidden! A simple Accio should help you along.

Add your Friend Code to our map if you haven’t yet. You can also have a look around the map and find players in your area!

We have a Local Community Map where you can add your Wizards Unite Communities for other players to find you, so check that out too!
If you have any more tips or information for new players make sure to leave them in the comment section. We’d love to make the most the Challenge and reach those goals. We need to work together!
