Here at Accio Wizards Unite we are, above all, geeky fans who love Harry Potter. And we’ve always enjoyed the community that surrounded this magical world from day one. Now, many years later, we decided to take a more active part in the community centred on Wizards Unite.

And as we set off, we met these wonderful creatures Newt definitely should have included in Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them. The WuTubers.

This feature section is dedicated to them. They are all different and unique, and they make amazing content everyone interested in Wizards Unite (and Harry Potter in general) should watch.

The Lovely Lynette!

If you play Wizards Unite and have been around the online community you have probably already seen Lynette’s content. She has some amazing videos, including some exclusive Wizards Unite Events.

But we wanted to get to know her a little better, and to give you guys the chance to do the same. So we grabbed our best Quick-Quotes Quill and got to work.

Getting to know Lynette

Tell us a little about yourself.

Name: Lynette
Age: late 20s, I have a birthday video on my channel where you could find out my exact age 1f642.png
Location: currently Tucson, Arizona area (1f440.png…)
Boggart shape: idk, something probably very confrontational, telling me that I’m a bad person

The name you choose for your YouTube channel and your social media often defines how people see you. So how did you choose WizardPhD?

[see later response for choosing my channel name] I changed my social handle to @profLynette / @professorlynette the day that I found out there were three professions. Of course, I had to pick Professor (because I am one in real life) and embrace my full Ravenclaw self!

What’s your Hogwarts House? And what do you think it says about you?

Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw, of course! I think the traits fit me pretty well (Intelligence. Wit. Wisdom. Creativity. Originality. Individuality. Acceptance.), and my love for learning about the world. Even though I am an educator, I view learning as something that cannot be confined to school walls and structures… my PhD is in the field of education, so I’ve thought about learning a lot. People are quite complex, and I find it fascinating!

The Harry Potter Community

How old were you when you discovered Harry Potter?

I grew up with Harry Potter. I didn’t start reading until 5th grade when lots of kids at school were also reading it (so, when I was 11, just like Harry!). And I wasn’t a huge reader before that. I mean, I read books to participate in those summer library events where you earn rewards, but it wasn’t because I *loved* to read. Luckily, I fell in love with the wizarding world and letting my imagination run away.

What do you like most about the Potterverse?

I love the stories, for sure. I love being able to let my imagination become totally immersed in the wizarding world. And I love how the stories cut deep. I love how our heroes are young magical people who are complex and go through a range of human experience–from tragedy to triumph. It’s all so beautiful.

Minerva McGonagall is my favorite character, so it’s PERFECT that she will be leading the Professors in HPWU. (She is also a Libra, like me!) If you haven’t read McGonagall’s backstory [Professor McGonagall - Pottermore] on Pottermore, I highly recommend! She has such strength and care that I hope to embody.

My favorite scene from the movies is the montage where Harry sees Snape’s memories. I bawl every single time. That, and when Dobby dies. LIKE. A. BABY. EVERY. TIME.

I don’t think I can choose a favorite book. I had some less favorite ones as a child, but now as an adult… I love them all so much.

The Life of a WuTuber

Being a WuTuber is a lot of work. What made you decide to start your channel? And why Wizards Unite?

I have always been an avid YouTube consumer (#MillennialLife) and appreciate YouTube content creators. I wanted to start a channel for a while but needed a reason and vision. After Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was announced, I watched a Trainer Tips episode where Nick encouraged viewers to start a YouTube channel if they were interested… and that was enough for me to take a leap and start my channel in December 2017.

I chose WizardPhD as my channel name because I had just earned my PhD but felt like I did not belong in the world of professors and academics (story of my life). Initially, #WizardPhD was a hashtag joke from when I visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The channel started out as an attempt to highlight the multidimensionality of how I saw WizardPhD: a range of philosophical ponderings, education rambles, pop culture examinations… basically, lots of academic vlogs. It was fine, but did not work for me; I felt as if my day job completely took over my life.

A Change in Direction

During summer 2018, I found WUtubers and reevaluated my channel purpose, which brought me back to focus on Harry Potter. The early videos and transitional period I went through are still public on my channel, if anyone is interested in the evolution.

Also, this Twitter thread sums it up quite nicely:

I have to pick a few of my favorite #WizardPhD episodes for something coming soon, so I’m going hardcore Ravenclaw and rewatching every single video on my channel 1f499.png

Evolution of a #YouTube channel. WOW. I’ve been making videos since 2017, and that’s a long(ish) time. [a thread)

I do not strongly identify with the PhD label as much anymore, but WizardPhD will always be a part of me. I literally want to get my channel logo as a tattoo.

Although I was inspired by Nick to start a YouTube channel on Wizards Unite, I never really had much confidence that I would be good enough to make gaming video content. Part of that was because I did not see many women of color who had gaming channels. I am also quite familiar with how women are perceived with particular discourses; I’ve had to manage other people who presume me as incompetent my entire life (that storytime rant is for another day, though…). A major focus of my work is to disrupt limiting notions that successful YouTubers look a particular way. I want other people who look like me to be seen and not invisible or overlooked. This channel means everything to me right now.

^A brief explanation for why WizardPhD exists.

What would you like people to know about your channel? What makes it special?

Professor Life

If you find a Ravenclaw Professor intensity with sometimes random philosophical pondering entertaining (which is why I spent forever writing and rewriting these responses — sorry, Sam!), then I am your girl. Not only am I a full on Professor on my channel for my main profession, but I love putting together puzzles and theorizing and paying attention to the tiniest detail that takes me down a rabbit hole of research.(Yes, I’ve always been this way…).

As a proud Ravenclaw, I’m always learning about new places; the world is so big! I love to travel, and frequently go on trips, both for work and for fun. I also have made a few cross-country moves in my life: Texas, Michigan, Arizona, California. Each new place becomes my new home, and I love supporting local businesses and artists. I hope to show off some of my travels to share the beauty in the world around us!

Go big or go home

I am a “go big or go home” person. I do not settle for mediocrity, which is why I am always trying to step up my game with each upload. Again, I’ve been a frequent consumer of YouTube for a while, and I’ve committed myself to strive for engaging and informative content. Sometimes I’m silly, sometimes I talk too loud with excitement, but I’m always trying to make content that *I* would want to watch.

I am also my biggest critic. Although I love so many of my videos, one goal I have is to find my creative voice that is my own (i.e., I am not a copycat, I am a creator). I think I’m close, but just as we all grow with time, I’m sure my voice will change as I continue learning.

Wizards Unite and Chronic Pain

Finally, for anyone who deals with chronic pain, my primary mission is to figure out how people like us come together in our communities to play Wizards Unite. More to come…

(I’m also INFJ personality type, so self-promotion makes me slightly anxious as I think and rethink how I should say something, how it might be perceived, making sure I don’t annoy people, and all the other thoughts where I constantly think about other people’s feelings. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.)

What do you look forward to the most about Wizards Unite?

OH MY GOODNESS, I need this game so much. The storyline. Having skills and professions where complementing each others’ strengths is key. Reliving magical moments from the wizarding world. ALL OF IT. I am ready for Niantic to bring deep philosophical discussions to the spotlight with this game. I am all for it.

What are your plans for the channel now that the game is out?

Vlogs from wherever in the world I am (hint, hint: I have my own summer tour planned out right now)! I also have planned a “How to play Wizards Unite” series, storyline theories, #ForMuggles refreshers on the wizarding world, and gameplay adventures.
The biggest challenge I have made to myself right now is further defining my channel’s voice. Who is WizardPhD? You know her a bit, but there’s a lot more to explore…
My primary goal for my channel is a commitment to witches & wizards who, like me, manage chronic pain
I hope to be an advocate for holistic wellbeing and care—physical, emotional, and mental health. And I’m getting excited just thinking about future plans I haven’t even thought of yet!! I’m in this for the long haul. Take me into retirement, Wizards Unite!!
Anything else you’d like to share?

This is going to sound like super self-promo, but check out my content! I recently rewatched all of my WizardPhD videos (to choose my favorites!), and I think you’ll learn a lot about me just by following. I post regularly on YouTube and always try to put the best quality videos I can (even on short timeframes when we get surprise Wizards Unite news).

I am on Twitter frequently and love to post/make silly gifs (HARD G, GIF). Instagram and Facebook are places where I tend to post random daily life stories. I love interaction with the community, so please feel free to say hi!

Some fantastic Wizards Unite Videos

Meeting Trainer Tips & Pkmn Master Holly at Tucson Heart Walk!

I mean, I feel like I don’t need to explain myself here. First of all, I finally gained some courage to approach two YouTubers I deeply admire. Second, I had no chill the entire time and was running purely on adrenaline for the whole event and hours (maybe even DAYS) after.

Establishing Your Magical Identity // Harry Potter Therapy (chapter 2)

If you haven’t watched my Harry Potter Therapy series yet, this episode might not completely make sense (so check out the whole series!).

I chose this video because I think it is the most important one on my channel in terms of sharing who I am and what I envision for my high-end channel content. In each episode, I think I am getting closer to that initial vision of bringing together my full multidimensional self–Harry Potter, philosophical pondering, and my goofy sense of humor (aka deep thoughts from someone who doesn’t take herself so seriously). I spend the most time and have the most heart in these episodes because I honor a full creative process. (Each chapter has taken me a full week of editing work, plus more time with storyboarding, writing, and research.) I’ve been launching these episodes as live premieres where I chat with viewers while it plays on YouTube for the first time, so be sure to turn on notifications to know when you can chat with me live!

I literally cannot choose between my Wizards Unite news and speculation videos, so I will recommend my latest episode where I break down the full trailer that was released on May 14. I am particularly proud of this one because I always seek to turnaround fast updates while maintaining a higher level of quality with my editing. I am not always first, but I tend to be pretty early with engaging visuals (and sometimes jokes or comedic edits). Also, I like to mix in my genuine reactions as much as possible, and there’s a lot in this episode because I was investigating the “love room” and potential theories as I was recording.

Honorable mentions:

#BackToHogwarts: WUtubers & Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Where will I be playing Wizards Unite?

Favorite throwbacks. I was new to the WUtubers at the time of these videos, so it really shows how far I’ve come! [Also, I am cracking up right now thinking about how The Wizards’ Guide pulled a bunch of strings to go to a Back To Hogwarts fan event at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando because we thought something with beta was gonna happen… back in September… or 2018. WE WERE SO YOUNG AND NAIVE, OKAY!?]

How to find and follow Lynette | WizardPhD

Here are a few places where you can find Lynette and her wonderful content. If you’re not following her yet, here is your chance!

Lynette and the Online Community

We’ve been asking around, and were not surprised in the least to find people really like Lynette. So we asked them to tell us what they thought of them. Here are some of the replies! (The tweet went out a little late this week, we will update with new responses as they come!)

  • @HPWitchesUnite: Lynette is such a sweet and genuine person! I love her enthusiasm for Harry Potter and her bright smile when she’s excited about something. I also deeply admire Lynette for her Harry Potter therapy series as well as her vulnerability about her health journey.
  • @AccioWU | Sam: I don’t usually write my own opinion here because I’m the one writing the post, but I want to make an exception today. Lynette is incredibly sweet and charming. She’s also extremely honest and brave, sharing her struggles with us in a way that makes us (me at least) feel understood and part of the community. She makes us feel like whatever is happening in our lives, we’re not alone. She’s also a ray of sunlight, and her personality, her cheerfulness and her love for Harry Potter shines through in all of her content. She’s an incredibly strong witch and a model of what we should all strive to be.
So now what?

Now, of course, you go and follow Lynette. And if you follow her on Instagram be ready for some of the cutest puppy pictures you could find! Check out her amazing videos (especially the Harry Potter Therapy Series) and make sure to subscribe and go back for more!
