There are many important figures in the Wizarding World. But here we will focus on a witch with a special place in our hearts, and in the upcoming Wizards Unite Augmented Reality Game.
If you choose to become a Professor, Minerva McGonagall will be your leader and your guide throughout the game. So let’s learn a little more about her.
Today’s profile: Minerva McGonagall
McGonagall in Wizards Unite
If you have been keeping up with our Gameplay posts you will know by now that, once we start the game, we will have to choose between three professions: you can be a Professor, an Auror or a Magizoologist.
Each profession will have a Leader that will be our contact and guide throughout the game. This person will be a well known witch or wizard we will recognise from the books, of course. And in the case of Professors, this leader will be Minerva McGonagall.
Although gameplay information is still scarce, we know our leader will welcome us into the game. They will give us the information we need to get started, which will probably include some news about the Calamity and perhaps even the London Five.
They will likely also be the ones in charge of explaining how Foundables and Confoundables work and what to do on each of the special locations. Hopefully, they will also explain the intricacies of those skill trees and how the Registry works.
And as the game progresses, they will be our point of contact for news, updates and keep us up to date as the storylines develop.
With all this in mind, it only makes sense to delve a little deeper into this formidable witch’s life and learn more about her.
Minerva was born in Scotland to a Muggle father and a witch mother, Robert and Isobel. Her mother hid the truth of the magical world from Robert for many years, so Minerva grew up surrounded by Muggles and in a non-magical household. However, once young Minerva began unwittingly performing magic, Isobel realised it was time to confess the truth. Their marriage survived the shocking revelation and they later had two more children, Malcolm and Robert Junior. Both of them wizards.
Minerva attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was sorted into Gryffindor. During her time at the school she showed an incredible aptitude for magic. Especially at transfiguration, with Albus Dumbledore as her teacher.
Soon after graduation, the Ministry of Magic offered Minerva a position at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. That summer before she started her new job, she had to make a very difficult decision. Minerva fell in love and agreed to marry a Muggle named Dougal McGregor. Realising she couldn’t live in secret like her mother had for so many years and not wanting to destroy her Ministry career by breaking the Statute of Secrecy, Minerva felt she had no choice but to break the engagement and move to London.
However, after two years working at the Ministry, Minerva decided to return to Hogwarts and become a teacher. Once Albus Dumbledore became Headmaster, she took over his former position as head of the Transfiguration Department. Sometime later she also became the Head of Gryffindor House.
Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave.
During her many years at Hogwarts, as both a teacher and later as the Headmistress, Minerva proved herself strict, but ultimately fair.
The First Wizarding War
Although Minerva did not officially join the Order of the Phoenix during Voldemort‘s first rise to power, she did help Dumbledore by spying on the Ministry. In her Animagus form, a tabby cat, she was largely free to roam the Ministry without being noticed. A perfect ability for a spy.
The war left her with significant losses, including the death of one of her brothers and of the man she had almost married. Not to mention many friends and former students.
Shortly after the end of the war, Minerva married Elphinstone Urquart, her former boss at the Ministry. However, the marriage did not last long, as Elphinstone died three years later.
The second Wizarding War
Ever loyal to Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix, Minerva did her best to protect Harry Potter during his years at Hogwarts. Although he never made her job easy.
Once Voldemort returned, Minerva resumed her work with the Order, although her primary focus remained the school and its students.
After Dumbledore’s death, Voldemort’s Death Eaters took control of Hogwarts. Despite the risk, Minerva remained at the school, most likely in an attempt to minimise the damage inflicted upon her students.
After fighting alongside the Order and those students who remained in the castle during the Battle of Hogwarts, Minerva took over the position of Headmistress.
She was still headmistress, in fact, almost two decades later, when Albus Severus Potter started at Hogwarts.
And that’s a Wrap
Personally, as someone who will choose to become a Wizards Unite Professor, I cannot think of a better mentor or guide than Professor Minerva McGonagall. Don’t you agree? Let us know in the comments! And don’t forget to follow us on twitter (@AccioWU) to keep up with the latest news!
