Portkey Games just announced via the Wizarding World website that they are developing a new Harry Potter game. While this is not the RPG game that leaked a while back, or the cards-type game announced a few months back, all Harry Potter games are good Harry Potter games. Let’s check out the information we have so far.
The New Harry Potter Game
You might remember earlier this year Warner Bros. and Pottermore created a new site, Wizarding World. This site consolidated all the Potterverse properties into one place. That’s the films, the books, the quizzes and much more.
Portkey Games partnered with Niantic to bring us Wizards Unite and reportedly have a few more Harry Potter games in the works. This time their partner in the new game is San Francisco-based social game developer, Zynga.
Here is the announcement for the latest one, a Match Three type of game that can keep us busy when we’re all out of Spell Energy or Foundables in our area.
Puzzles have long been an integral part of the Wizarding World, from outsmarting McGonagall’s chess set to solving Triwizard clues. Over the years, fans have loved challenging themselves with Harry Potter board games, puzzles, quizzes and brainteasers and so now we are excited to announce a new Harry Potter puzzle game for mobile, from San Francisco-based social game developer, Zynga, under the Portkey Games label.
From the moving bricks at the entrance to Diagon Alley, the delicious treats of Honeydukes and the mischief of Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, players will be able to match their way through the moments from the Harry Potter films they know and love. With themed puzzle boards, familiar characters, potions and spell combinations, as well as magical mischief, players can celebrate the Wizarding World in a whole new way.
As this new Match-3 game is going into Beta testing soon, this is all we can say for now. But we’ll be updating you on more developments very soon. In the meantime, you can learn more about Portkey Games here.
Our thoughts on this game
To be honest, we’re always happy to see new Harry Potter games. And I’m usually a fan of these types of puzzle / match games, so I’m happy with the announcement. Especially since it’s already close to going into beta testing, which means the release date should be near.
However we’ve all been anxiously waiting for that RPG game we’ve heard so many rumours about (a year ago!). So while this is good news in our book, it’s still not the best we could get.
But all in all, while we wait for at least two more games to come out, this seems like an interesting way to pass the time when we’re not playing Wizards Unite. And who doesn’t like a simple match game? Let’s just hope they keep the game free to play, like Wizards Unite, and not a money grab, like Hogwarts Mysteries quickly turned into (having to wait that long to perform any action unless you pay is just not that much fun for most people.)
