The Wizards Unite Announcement
Many of us will remember that day. On November 8, 2017 Niantic CEO John Hanke revealed that his company, along with Portkey Games, was developing a Harry Potter AR game set to release in the latter half of 2018.
That was, of course, followed by a year of near-absolute silence on the developers’ part.
Wizards Unite News begin to trickle in
Just about a year after the initial announcement, and well into the latter half of 2018 that was supposed to be the Wizards Unite release date, the silence finally broke.
On November 13, 2018 we finally got to see the brand new logo (you can read our in-depth analysis here). Then, on November 14, 2018 we got our first glimpse of what the game would look like. The teaser trailer shows a member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force catching a rogue Snitch.
Along with this came some information that, by then, we more than expected.
Pottermore confirmed (here) that the release had been pushed to 2019 with this announcement:
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is coming in 2019. Stay tuned for more details!
And on twitter the release date information was very similar.
According to Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, Wizards Unite will be releasing this summer.
Along with the pre-registration news, we got an authentic treasure trove on March 11. Niantic finally released gameplay information, images and some short videos. You can check all of those out in our Wizards Unite Gameplay Guide.
Release Date Speculation
There are many important dates related to Harry Potter that could easily become a significant Wizards Unite Release Date.
We could have a release in July, to coincide with Harry Potter’s birthday. Or perhaps a September 1 release, on the same day Hogwarts’ school year begins.
The September 1, 2019 possibility seems a little implausible, considering the fact that, after a year of silence, the developers have finally got their gears in motion publicity-wise. This release date would mean nine more months of wait, snippets and little videos that are sure to leave Harry Potter fans immensely frustrated.
A July release date seems like a good idea in that it would land in the middle of summer (for the northern hemisphere). Warm weather could be quite helpful for an AR game where the main goal is to go out and interact with our environment.
Another possibility, and the one we are all hoping for, is a spring release. This way, the players can enjoy more months of mild or hot weather to go out and play before the cold and the rain drives us back into our homes.
Whatever option the developers choose for the Wizards Unite release date, we are sure to find out soon.
