For those of you who always dreamed of being Aurors, Wizards Unite is the way to go.
We’re still waiting for a Wizards Unite release date or beta apk info. Until then, we’re covering what we know about Wizards Unite Gameplay from those amazing images we got earlier this month through Pottermore and the official WU website. We’ve done our best to break the information down by categories in order to review it in more detail.
After writing about the three Wizarding Professions we’ll get to choose from, we felt it was time to go into each of them and see what they’re all about.
And today we’ll start with what might be the most popular one:
Wizards Unite Professions: Aurors
The game describes Aurors as “Elite witches and wizards that specialize in defeating practitioners of the Dark Arts through unmatched spellcasting efficiency and debilitating spells.”
Aurors in Harry Potter
We were first introduced to Aurors in the Harry Potter books. Aurors work for the Ministry as part of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. They are roughly the magical equivalent of the Muggle police force.
In order to become an Auror, Hogwarts graduates must go through a very specific training. Although we don’t have many details, we do know candidates must obtain high marks in several school subjects in order to become eligible.
MACUSA also has an Auror department, which we have seen in the Fantastic Beasts. While wizarding law works different each country, Auror departments seem to work roughly the same way.
Aurors are, due to their jobs, trained in duelling and defensive magic. They must learn to conceal themselves (something Tonks excelled at) and move with stealth (something she had a little more trouble with).
Some of the Aurors we know from the books are Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt. Depending on the year Wizards Unite is set, Kingsley might in fact be the current Minister of Magic. Tina Goldstein, from Fantastic Beasts, who later married Newt Scamander, was a MACUSA Auror.
After the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry and Ron both became Aurors. However, Ron left the department a few years later and went into business with his brother George.
Aurors in Wizards Unite
Each profession will have an in-game leader, a non-playable character who will guide us through our training and along the game.
If you choose Auror as your profession, Harry Potter will be that leader. In the present time he should be an Auror himself, so who better to teach us the ropes than the Boy Who Lived himself?
Aurors: Skill tree
As you can see, there are several different paths we can take within the same profession.
The skills on the left side of the tree seem to focus more on defence, while the ones on the right appear to be centred on offence, or attack.
The first thing this tells us is that we can make our evolution as an Auror quite personalised. A player can decide to centre their efforts on defence, offence or a mix of the two.
If you look closely at each node on the tree, you will notice the circle around it. This is what we will have to fill up in order to acquire a skill or master a spell. Some of the nodes require only one ‘point’ (this might have a different name in-game, but we’ll stick to points for now). As you progress down the tree and level up you will reach new nodes that will require more points to complete.
An important thing to keep in mind is that, once a point is used on a certain node, it cannot be moved or taken back. What this means is that a clever player will plan ahead and decide which path to take before spending their points.
From the information we have so far, you can obtain points by tracking down and containing Foundables in your area and using the corresponding Confoundable. We will also probably get points through Potions-related mini-games and Fortress incursions.
Aurors and Fortresses
Fortresses are the place where we will be able to team up with other players. We will battle beasts, dark wizards and Merlin knows what else as we try to make our way to the top.
There have been several mentions of working with a varied team for best results. It seems the ideal way to win a Fortress is to team up with players with different professions and skills.
When it comes to team-play, each profession will work differently in regard to power and resilience. In general, we are expecting Aurors to be the profession to cause the most damage. Unfortunately that will probably mean they will be able to take less damage than others.
This image shows some of the stats for Aurors. This stats will vary depending on how far along the game you are. They will also be different if you choose to specialise in a certain area (such as defence or offence).
Let’s do a very quick run down of the main ones.
The first item on the list is Stamina. This is basically the energy we have at a certain point in the game. When we run our, we will have to make our way to an inn to recharge.
Then we have power, which is our avatar’s strength; their ability to cause damage. The percentages beneath that show our skills in different areas. This Auror’s critical power is 94%, which means they can do quite a bit of damage. Their precision will probably influence the damage they cause, too. In this case it is at 30%.
But if we look at the defensive abilities we can see this Auror leaned heavily on attack power. Their defense (-5%), deficiency defense (0%) and Protego Power (25%) are quite low. Especially when compared to their offensive abilities.
So when it comes to team work during a Fortress incursion, you might need more than one Auror to come along, in case they receive too much damage. But you also want them there to deal it out, since they are the profession best suited for battles.
Perhaps that is why the game is called Wizards Unite. The wizarding community is at its best when it’s working together.
